查看原图 Graduate Parade Pt. 8!

While we couldn't have an in-person graduation, The Academy faculty did their best to make the event special. Last week, in addition to our virtual graduation ceremony, a small army of faculty began a two-day, 400-mile caravan, stopping at each seniors home to hand-deliver diplomas and personally applaud each graduate. Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

查看原图 The teachers, students, staff, security, Robert and Henry everybody has something they bring to the building that they can teach another person. Everybody has something they can improve on. You get nowhere if you insist you do it on your own. And yes, you have something valuable to bring to the Academy community as well. Emmeth Murphy is graduating from the 媒体艺术 Department and will be taking a gap year before attending Lawrence University, where she hopes to continue to study and practice filmmaking, while looping in her deep curiosity for folklore and the history of storytelling.

Emmeth took this opportunity to acknowledge two people she will never forget, the late Mary Caraway, and her arts department chair Jessi Meliza. I will never forget the wonderful hugs that Ms. Caraway gave me on those mornings when the train was late, my socks were wet, I hadnt finished the reading for Mr. Roux, and it just seemed like the world was turning upside down. But a moment in her arms felt so grounding and special. She understood the ins and outs all the intricacies of life at The Academy. Ms. Caraway was a fairy godmother who had no need for magic, she just did it on her own. Jessi Meliza hasnt just taught me how to be a Media Artist, she has taught me how to be an artist who understands the effort of art no matter the level. She has taught me how to be flexible, how to fall hard and find yourself when you get back up again. Meliza hasnt just practiced being an artist, shes practiced the art of practicing, of moving forward, of being where you are. Congratulations Emmeth!

查看原图 I will never forget the simple things like hanging out with friends during free periods or even just saying goodbye to everyone at the end of every day. I will miss just being a student. If I could, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Jack Romero graduated from the Music Department and is headed to the University of Southern California to major in their Popular 音乐 Program! He told us what he thought made The Academy unique. What makes The Academy unique is the bond everybody holds with each other because it is such a small school, not just within the student body but with the faculty as well. The small class sizes really allow for individualized help. Before I came to The Academy I was a solid B student, but after I built relationships with my teachers and learned that it was good to ask for help, my GPA skyrocketed to a 4.0. The arts education is so rewarding because once again, I built individualized relationships with every person and teacher in my department. We are a family and we always will be. I hang out with Mr. Roux and Mr. Tynan just as much as I hang out with my friends during free periods. Jack also had some advice for incoming freshmen. Do not be afraid to experiment with your art. Reach out of your comfort zone! Never once did I believe I would sing opera in my future and I performed a trio from the opera The Marriage of Figaro at the All-school 橱窗 in front of a sold-out crowd at The Athenaeum! But most importantly, Jack cherished the Academy community. Being gay, I was terrified coming to a new school. I personally was not accepted as a gay man at my previous school, nor did I ever get the chance to focus on my art. I chose The Academy because it felt safe and good. Even during my shadow day, I not only was met with open arms, but with open hearts and a smile. This is something you cannot find anywhere else, and I wish students elsewhere knew what it felt like to be surrounded by love and acceptance every day. Congratulations Jack!

查看原图 Before coming to The Academy, I wanted to focus on illustration or fashion design. That soon changed to painting. Now, a graduating senior, Im going to college for Architectural Design. The teachers here are never hesitant to point you in the direction that they think your talents and abilities can be the most useful. But, they will always have enough respect to have a conversation about your future if you are ever confused. In regards to academics, don't think that just because we are at an art school that we have it easy! Just like any other school, academic classes are very difficult. Congratulations to Amy Li, who is heading to the Pratt Institute in the fall! She looked back at the artistic and academic support she received at The Academy. The Academy is a place where all talents and interests are openly accepted. It is an inclusive community where the word family can really be defined. Its unique in a way that as a young student, your dreams and future goals are well respected and fully supported; whether you want to be a professional artist or you are looking to achieve another degree after graduating, you will be able to find the resources and opportunities here. Finally, Amy wanted to recognize two special Academy teachers. I will never forget Ms. Hoffman. Our freshman year was her first year at The Academy, and it was really meaningful that we got to experience the first year of high school with such an amazing woman. She's been a life and 英语 literature mentor to many of us for the past four years and will remain a best friend after we graduate. Another teacher Ill never forget is Madame (Anna Mijalski, French). I was so lucky to have her as my first world languages teacher. Everyone in my French class has built an unbreakable bond with her and I will never forget all the treats and sweets she takes the extra time to buy for us. Congratulations Amy!

查看原图 Prospective students! Please join our faculty for upcoming masterclasses in still life painting, animation, and Shakespeare! 联系 the 招生 Department to reserve your spot. More information by clicking the link in the bio.

Animation: Over 3 online workshops, students will be introduced to the very basics of animation. From idea development, to animation principles, to visual storytelling, participants will start to think like an animator! At the end of the three sessions, expect to have a portfolio of drawings, storyboards, and 2-3 short animated cycles.

Still life painting: The 视觉艺术 Department invites students to join us for a series of master classes about the history of the genre of still life painting. From 17th century Dutch vanitas paintings, to the influential works by Cezanne and Picasso, to contemporary sculpture and installation art today, artists have used still lives for a variety of artistic intentions and for complex conceptual reasons. Throughout these sessions through drawing, works in color, and sculpture, we will return to theses questions: How do artists challenge perception and bring renewed attention to everyday life? How can everyday objects represent symbolic meaning and address bigger ideas and concepts? What objects can we assign new and / or different meaning to in order to share thoughts about and represent our time now occurring?

Shakespeare: Using several of Shakespeare's most important works, students enrolled in this masterclass series will learn techniques for text and character analysis, story theatre principles, and ideas for making theatre with items from their recycle bin. Each one hour workshop will give students something to work on for the next week's class with a chance to showcase work for one another each day.
